NOLI ME TANGERE (The Musical)
Based on Jose Rizal's controversial novel

this tale of intrigue, murder and insanity…of
an angry young man’s scathing indictment against
Spanish colonial power. A literary epic that spawned
the birth of a nation.
NOLI ME TANGERE highlights the enchanting
libretto of playwright Dr. Bienvenido Lumbera and
the hauntingly captivating music of multi-awarded
musical director/composer Ryan Cayabyab. Dancer, choreographer,
theater director and independent filmmaker Paul Morales
gives the National Hero Jose Rizal’s masterpiece
a new treatment that allows us to take pleasure in
the romance and youthful drama of a great Filipino
novel.
In line with the government’s thrust in promoting
the coconut tree as the Tree of Life, the set design
of New York-based theater and film artist Clint Ramos
is a massive structure of sloping coco lumber. “The
set should look like one giant tsunami of logs rolling
onto the audience. It should have a precarious feel
to its size and movement”, says Clint.
Completing the artistic team is awarded composer
and pianist Jed Balsamo as musical director, Ricardo
Cruz as set & costume consultant, Ian Torqueza
as lighting designer, Shoko Matsumoto as lighting
consultant, Bunny Brendia as choreographer and Barbara
Tan-Tiongco as technical director.
The impressive cast features the outstanding talents
of Jon Joven and Arnold Reyes, alternating as the
patriotic Crisostomo Ibarra, with Angeli Bayani, Lena
McKenzie and Princess Virtudazo as Maria Clara alternates.
Also in the remarkable cast are Bong Embile and Red
Nuestro (Kapitan Tiago), Dodo Crisol and Rody Vera
(Padre Damaso), Nazer Salcedo and Kenneth Cataylo
(Padre Salvi), Cynthia Culig-Guico, Deeda Barretto
and Dang Elio (Sisa), Deeda Barretto (Tia Isabel),
Garry Lim and Estanislao Alinea (Don Tiburcio), Tess
Jamias and Catherine Racsag (Doña Victorina),
Paolo Rodriguez and Lionel Guico (Elias) and the Tanghalang
Pilipino Actors’ Company.
This dynamic new staging runs at the Tanghalang
Aurelio Tolentino (CCP Little Theater) from November
11 to December 4, 2005, with matinees at 3:00pm on
Saturdays and Sundays, and evening shows at 8:00pm
on Fridays and Saturdays.

A very modern adaptation of William Shakespeare’s
immortal love story loosely based on National Artist
Rolando Tinio’s Filipino translation. Set in
the slums of Manila (Barangay Verona) where the “jologs”
culture thrives, the production takes a fresh look
on this romance with the star-crossed lovers and their
warring households dressed up in kitschy denim couture,
uttering sonnets peppered with brazen street jargon
and cryptic swardspeak. Even with an irreverent kanto
translation, it refuses to romanticize juvenile love,
teenage sex, suicide, streetfighting and drug abuse;
it even faces these realities and subtly makes fun
of them.
